On the new games front —

Nothing.

I haven’t been actively avoiding new games, but I haven’t been jumping into them either. I’ve been revisiting old games. I suppose I should try Seasons, at least.

  • I got a copy of expansion #2 to Smarty Party, which I didn’t know existed. It’s still infuriating.
  • I (finally) printed out the 2nd edition rules for No Retreat! I need to get that back to the table. This is one of the few games I’m planning on bringing to the Gathering to play. I was inspired by the latest P500 geeklist, which had a number of interesting sounding games. I preordered four (including the new No Retreat! for North Africa, which should be out in a 3-4 months).  I may wake up and undo the other three, as they are all long games.
  • Best Who Would Win Debate I’ve ever heard — Conan vs Darth Vader at Science Fair. Not a great game, but amusing.
  • Now that Isotropic is dead, played a few games of Dominion (Dark Ages) face to face. Still good.
  • Also played a few games of Ticket to Ride (1910), Wiz War, Alhambra and a few older games got a play as well over the last month.
  • Coup is still the go-to filler de jour. I’ll probably have fifty plays within 48 hours. Netrunner broke 150 plays recently.

(FYI — My P500s — No Retreat! The North African Front, Churchill, Unconditional Surrender and The Supreme Commander).

More Netrunner

Continuing my thoughts:

  1. I picked up a second core set. That way the TaoLing and I can each build decks without knowing what the other built (and if I play tournaments we can raid the second set).
  2. The “Max 15 points of influence” does make for some hard choices. I’ve built a shaper deck based around 14 points of out of faction icebreakers (and searching), and deciding what made the cut and what didn’t is a real decision.
  3. I’m hoping we get a nice group of players locally.

Android:Netrunner Initial Thoughts

I’ve now played a few games of Android:Netrunner … I played Netrunner quite a bit when it was out, so I’m coming from the Point of View of someone familiar with the old school game.

Out of the box, the game plays very much like sealed deck netrunner. You don’t know much, so you make runs, bluff and double bluff. Quite fun. I suspect that after 10+ games you’ll know what the prebuilt decks contain a bit too well.

The factioning makes for interesting deckbuilding constraints, but it’s likely too constrained (a bit) right now, particularly that each faction’s agendas (think “goals”) are set in stone. So if you see a Jinteki deck, you know quite a bit about it. Hopefully after a few mini expansions each faction will gain a bit of flexibility.

The “Max 3 per deck” and “Max X points of out of faction cards” will, I hope, work quite well in the long run. I don’t know if it will necessarily be much cheaper than a CCG, but it will be a level playing field and should make constructed much better than Netrunner eventually became.

Rating — Enthusiastic. I may pick up a second core set, particularly if  the Taoling likes this enough to deck build.
