Winnowing the Minnows

I see more sharks swimming on BSW. I’ve had several close games (wins and losses) and a blowout loss where the winner ignored the building track (reassuring). The basic formula appears to be:

  1. Build the Mason & Lawyer
  2. Build the architect
  3. Run the VP track
  4. ????

The first two are to make sure you don’t get shut out of a prestige building. The third is to build up VPs, obviously. That 4th point is “do something clever,” but I’m not sure it stays the same.

But a refreshing loss, nonetheless.

Questions about Computer Moderated Games

Let’s see … today I played a few games of San Juan on BSW. According to the point checker, I’m 1400 points away from W12. Which implies I should be Rank 11, but I’m only Rank 8. I’m mildly curious why (the FAQ on levels doesn’t publish what you need for W9). What am I missing?

I also downloaded a little stand alone Puerto Rico game from BGG. It’s nice enough (and I’m always curious to see how people handle the graphics) but the AI isn’t yet good enough to give a reasonable game.

Most ambitiously, I downloaded Vassal, an engine for playing games (usually large Wargames) against opponents online. It took a while to get started, now I’m not quite sure how to actually chat, find opps and play a game. Why download it now? To go downtown, of course.

So, anyone I know use Vassal? I’d like to start playing a game or two I know (like Age of Steam, or Struggle of Empires) to get a feel for the engine. Then I can try to play those games I own but can never find the time or opponents for. Any takers?

BSW A year later

I’ve been on BSW for a year now, and I’m really playing a lot more now that I don’t have a steady gaming group. [For instance, I just played one of the closest games of Puerto Rico I’ve played in a long time. 46-45-45-44. And I usually get a game of San Juan now and again.

So I’ve got to admit, I’m happy that I finally joined up. Having fast internet access helps, as I can play and surf (if there are slow players) or what not.

And it doesn’t hurt that they’re tracking my games. That’s nice to see my progress in various games (my win percentage in Power Grid shot up after I had played a dozen times or so). If you can’t get a game locally, definitely the way to go.
