The Tao of Gaming

Boardgames and lesser pursuits

Depths, Jaded Novelty, etc etc

In the last few years I’ve managed to pound several games to 50+ plays …

  • To court the King
  • Race (natch)
  • San Juan
  • Glory to Rome
  • Roma
  • Power Grid
  • Strat-o

Before that I probably had only a few games in the 50+ mark: Shadowfist, L5R, Magic, Titan, Outpost, and traditional games (Bridge, Chess, Poker, Scrabble). Maybe 18xx (counted singularly, but thsoe are long games, so may as well count them). I could see several recent games eventually hitting 50+ (Phoenicia, Agricola, BSG) in a few years.

I know that I’m not blazing a trail … part of this is just the “Been there, played that” that makes the 1,002nd title not as intriguing as the 2nd. And while I joke about being a curmuedgeon, I find myself flipping through the Essen and Nurenburg news muttering, “Eh.” I’m not quite ready to give up on this blog, but it does mean that I’ll go without anything really relevant to say for longer at a time.

  1. You just need to play Space Alert! Then you’ll have plenty to talk about again for a while.

  2. So Glory to Rome has been holding up for you? I was kinda surprised for me it cruised to like 20-25 plays and hasn’t been seen since. I think it just seemed slightly on the wrong side of the chaos/length ratio barrier for us. It was a lot of fun while it lasted, but Race is more satisfying and I’m not sure I need two.

  4. What is it about Roma that has held your interest? I really enjoyed my 10 (or so) playings of it, but once I confirmed that the over-powerful forums determine the victor, I put it on the pile for sale.

The basic system is sound and I’m sure it can be fixed with a reworking of the cost and defense values, but that’s too big a job to do myself.

I do look forward to Roma II (should it ever be published).

  5. I agree with Greg on Roma: Great attempt but the costs/defense values/power levels of the cards are off. Weak cards tend to ALSO have low defense while strong cards also have high defense, with the exception of a few cases, like the forum.

There are basically a couple ways to win: You either use forums to score points, or you take all of your opponents points with a combination of attacks/tribunus steal 1pt guy, to keep them low while you save up money, and then you use Mercator to steal the rest.

It looks like, from your list, that I need to try Glory to Rome.

  9. Roma — I do think the cards need to be balanced, but being fast forgives a lot.

G2R — Doesn’t seem to take that long, it’s not getting the plays it used to, but still gets pulled out every now and then.
