Boardgames and lesser pursuits

Others writing so I can sleep in

Hey, I played in that! Which saves me from writing a session report. Not that I was going to.

  1. I like the idea of balancing Roslin, because she is definitely too strong at present. (Your ability to help the humans or harm them if a cylon is huge). Her one time ability is strong as well.

Having to discard 2 cards to use a location ends up not being that important most of the time. Basically it means that instead of using the press room, you play consolidate power. So instead of getting 2 yellow, you trade a small yellow (probably a 1), for 2 cards of your choice. Thats only barely weaker.

Sean McCarthy’s idea of balancing her:
To use the vision power, you must discard a card. (Side effect of Kamala extract).

Illness drawback is changed to: Whenever you discard cards, you must discard at random. This includes moving between ships.

Thus Roslin may use press room and presidents office again (thematic). But she loses 1 card AT RANDOM per turn and also all president card discards are random.

(Even then, I think she is still too strong. Its kindof hard to balance an ability that is better than 1 Action + 2 Purple cards per turn!).

You could then also modify Apollo’s drawback as well.

Other characters in need of balancing are Boomer and Tyrol.

Boomer being stuck in the brig is too big of a personal drawback, especially as you probably became a Cylon.

Being a Cylon can be cool. Becoming a cylon in the sleeper agent phase when youre in the brig isnt. She is also the only player who cant play executive order, which is painful if you end up being human, and she doesnt get yellow to be able to draw executive orders either.

But she needs a big drawback, or else the scouting ability is too strong like Roslin’s.

People who pay resources to let Boomer out of the brig, when there are sitll unrevealed Cylons, are making a mistake. If everything is going great and no one is sabotaging or revealing as a Cylon, DONT CHANGE ANYTHING. Youre going to win. Probably Boomer is trying to convince you she is human so youll let her out, and then she’ll screw you. The best thing you can have is a Cylon player helping out to try and convince you they are human. The game is REALLY EASY with everyone cooperating.

Tyrol has two big drawbacks: drawing 2 blue cards and having a lower hand limit, and they arent balanced by any particularly useful powers. His abilities are below average compared to the rest.
